What is a mood disorder?

A mood disorder is a mental health disorder that primarily affects a person’s emotional state. People with mood disorders may experience extreme sadness, known as depression, and/or excessive happiness and energy, known as mania.

Major depressive disorder is the most well-known and commonly experienced of mood disorders, however, there are several different types of mental illnesses that fall under this umbrella. Other types of mood disorders include persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia), bipolar disorder, disruptive mood dysregulation disorder, and more.

How I Can Help

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has been shown to be very effective in treating mood disorders. I mainly utilize different forms of CBT, such as dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), mindfulness therapy, etc. to treat symptoms and help folks feel confident and in-control of their emotions.
